Cliff Williams: The Anchor of AC/DC

While Angus Young grabs the spotlight and Brian Johnson commands the microphone, Cliff Williams has arguably the most critical job in AC/DC: holding it all together. Joining the band in 1977 just before the release of Powerage, Cliff became the steady heartbeat of the group for over four decades.

Cliff is the definition of a "pocket" bass player. He eschews flashy solos and complex runs in favor of driving, rhythmic precision. By locking in perfectly with drummer Phil Rudd, he created the legendary "engine room" that gives AC/DC its massive, foot-stomping groove. As many musicians say, you might not always notice the bass, but you would instantly feel the loss of power if he stopped playing.

On stage, Cliff is the cool, stoic counterweight to Angus’s frenetic energy. Often seen standing near the back amps, head nodding to the beat, he provides the sonic foundation that allows the guitars to soar. Furthermore, his strong backing vocals are a key ingredient in the band’s signature anthemic choruses on tracks like “Thunderstruck” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.”
